Seal-die of Isabella of Hainault
Seal-die’s were used to imprint a picture into hot wax in order to seal a document. The seal-die’s of medieval kings and queens very rarely survived as they were destroyed when the monarch died. The seal-die of Isabella of Hainault, wife of Philip II of France, survived because it was placed in her coffin when she died in 1190. In 1858, Isabella’s coffin was moved and opened and the seal-die and several other items were discovered and removed. The Latin inscription around the sides translates as ‘Isabella, by grace of God, queen of France’ and the image depicts her crowned and holding regalia.
